Basingstoke & Deane and Hart District Council Local Elections 2023

This year we are standing 9 candidates in Basingstoke & Deane along with 4 candidates in Hart.

Details of our candidates can be found below:

 Basingstoke & Deane

Brighton Hill - Steve Philpotts

I have lived in the south-west of Basingstoke for fifty years. During that time I have seen the area transformed, but while new families arrive to live in our ever-expanding town, the essential public services they need continue to be run down or sold off by the current ruling party. Conservatives continue to give us austerity while they benefit from a taxation system that favours those with wealth, as well as subsidising carbon emissions which we know have to be reduced quickly if we are going to be able to live in a secure world.  We can no longer blindly go on depleting our natural resources for the benefit of the few. We need local councillors who support the need for this fundamental change. The Green Party is the only political party that offers us all a fair and sustainable life - and looks beyond the next few years.

Chineham - Jonathan Jenkin

I joined The Green Party in 2018 because I feel it is the only party that lets me be myself and aligns to most of my politics. I've lived in Basingstoke for over 10 years, much of that time in Chineham. In that time I've become the Co-Chair of the Basingstoke and North East Hampshire Green Party and a Parish Councillor for Chineham. I've joined the recently reformed Chineham conservation society, helping to preserve the ancient woodland around the area. I also helped found the Chineham repair cafe to promote sustainability and help reduce landfill waste. I believe that the only way we can take measures to mitigate climate change is via political institutions and having people in power who will act responsibly.

Eastrop & Grove - Jason Buick

I moved to Basingstoke 28 years ago after University and live in Eastrop and Grove. I believe that climate change is a real and urgent threat and we need to be investing in renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions and protecting our natural resources for the generations of today and tomorrow. I believe everyone deserves a fair chance in life regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or economic status. Voting for The Green Party is a vote to prioritise environmental protection and social justice.

Evingar - Chris Whitehead

I joined the Green Party because it is the only political party offering rational solutions, not only to the impending climate catastrophe which is soon going to dwarf all other problems facing society, but also to the very real social problems caused by colossal inequality and the management of our public services as if they were simply profit centres. Since the late sixties I have been aware of the impact that we are making on our environment. Having spent seventeen years living abroad, in Germany, France and Malta, I can speak with personal knowledge of how far behind this country is in simple practical solutions like recycling, rented housing and public transport. A former Royal Marine, as a councillor I would fight for the promotion of environment-friendly projects in our area. I have decades of experience in industry, and would, if elected, be accountable to the voters of Evingar. I have lived in the area for twenty-one years, and have a son and daughter who went to local schools. Vote  for The Green Party on May 4 for a viable alternative.

Kempshott & Buckskin - Bill Farrington

I have lived in Basingstoke since 2002 following retirement from the RAF; I previously served 6 years at Odiham in a career lasting 22 years.  I then worked in contract security for some 20 years experiencing such diverse industries as pharmaceutical, oil & gas and banking.  All my experiences have led me to conclude that the Green Party is the only party that truly believes in bold solutions based on democracy and justice whilst remaining within our planet’s natural limits. The Tories and Labour are both wedded to the past and the status quo; they only offer sticking plaster solutions to the problems we all now face. If the Green Party policies had been followed over the last decade we would not be facing an energy crisis, under investment in our businesses or a divided nation.  Only the Green Party has a strategy for a sustainable future.

Oakley & The Candovers - Lianne Mabey

I have lived in Oakley for just over a year having lived in Basingstoke since 2016. The environment is very important to me along with ensuring everyone has access to enjoyable and suitable green areas. The Green Party’s Right Homes, Right Place, Right Price Charter is something I fully stand behind. Rather than letting developers pay no regard to the needs of communities and the environment, we should be holding them to account. I believe a sustainable, pragmatic approach is required to protect our environment and communities for future generations.

Tadley & Pamber - Richard Musson

I live in Pamber Heath with my wife, 2 children and dog. I have lived in this area for the last 36 years. I have been a member of the Green Party since 2019 where I joined the party as I know things can be better, and the best way to instigate change is through action. I wanted to stand as a candidate to give my fellow residents an opportunity to vote for the Green Party. After May this year the Green Party will have more councillors than ever before. Every Green seat won means other political parties will sit up and listen. At the Green Party we have the most progressive vision for Britain, and we will always stand up for real democracy

Whitchurch, Overton & Laverstoke - Hina West

I live in Whitchurch with my husband, daughter and flock of ex-commercial hens. We have been part of this thriving community for over seven years and plan to do so for many years to come. With a 18+ year career focused on social and environmental impact I am acutely aware of the necessity and opportunity to live in harmony with nature. The Green Party is the only party that truly aligns with this ethos and understands how to deliver it, whilst safeguarding our economy and raising the voices that need to be heard. I am standing as a candidate for the Green Party in my local area to give my neighbours the chance to vote Green if they so wish for now and our children’s future.

Winklebury & Manydown - Alex Hackett

I grew up in Basingstoke - I went to Primary School in Old Basing and Secondary School at Bishop Challoner. My first job was at TK Maxx in Festival Place, back when it was still a bustling shopping centre, with far fewer vacant shops! I care deeply about Basingstoke and want what’s best for it. I, like the local Green Party, care about our schools, our infrastructure and our green spaces. Look at what’s happened to Basingstoke under the Tories: rampant house building and destruction of the local countryside, rivers polluted with sewage, roads riddled with potholes, empty stores in Festival Place and a struggling Top of Town. Labour under Starmer will just be more of the same. I’m standing to give the residents of Winklebury and Manydown the opportunity to vote for The Green Party: the only party offering truly bold, sustainable solutions.

 Hart

Crookham West & Ewshot - Joe Hutton

I have lived in Crookham since 2018. I have a PhD in Astrophysics, and currently work in the IT sector. Like many, I joined the Green Party out of a desire to leave this world better than I found it. I chose to stand as a candidate to give my neighbours the Green option on the ballot. I know that there are many in the community who believe like I do, in the importance of conservation and the environment. And without representation across all political levels, the Green Party won't be able to hold other parties accountable and deliver a sustainable future.

Fleet East - Samantha Davis

I am a hardworking local mum of two who wants to contribute to our community as a warm and approachable Councillor. I will listen, put your priorities at the top of the agenda, and through the support of my Green network, contribute Green solutions to the challenges we face. It is clear to me that the residents of Fleet East care about the environment as a priority and therefore deserve the opportunity to join the Green movement that’s gathering momentum across the country. A vote for me as the Green Party candidate is a vote for a fairer greener community. It is also a statement of intent that we care and we want to make positive change happen here in Fleet East.

Fleet West - Wayne Rozier

I have been resident of Elvetham Heath and Fleet for 24 years.  I have worked for central government in the Home Office, Treasury, UK Exports, HMRC, Policing (crime, counter terror and serious crime), Prisons and probation, Transport for London, Rural Payments, FCA, the Charities commission and currently the Department for Education.  A member of the Green party for over 5 years, I have supported the environmental lobby since 1976 after studying Atmospheric pollution. I am known to push the system to get things done, taking a legal case to High court for SEN provision, and with a residents association pushed a LA to get a promised new school built.  I believe a genuine Green voice in council is essential to ensure council planned climate change mitigations underpin every decision and service provided by the council and contribute to local climate resilience for the community without diminishing the service provision.

Odiham - Lars Mosseson

I joined the Green Party in 1979, inspired by the environmental challenges that were starting to be recognized and by the Party’s visionary manifesto.  The challenges and the practical responses proposed have become ever-more important over the years.  I became director of the Conservation Trust, and my wife and I moved to Long Sutton in 1990, and our children went to the Village school.  I have chaired the Village Hall committee and two local cricket clubs, and I have put on a number of pantomimes in the Village.  I am an academic lawyer, specializing in human rights and Constitutional law.  My interests range from the connections between justice and the global environment to local planning and sustainable housing.  The last time I stood for election in the Odiham ward, I came second.
